Hello!
And welcome to The Crafty Quill!
Does your manuscript need an extra set of eyes before it goes to publishing?
Then you’ve come to the right place!
My name is Janet Byers, and I am the founder and owner of
The Crafty Quill Editing and Proofreading Services.
I’m also a published author, with novels available on Amazon, Goodreads, and BookBub under my pen name J.R. Byers.
About me.
Before I started my writing career, I decided to get my degree in English.
After I did this, I began freelancing as an editor, proofreader, and beta reader for many of my author friends.
Like me, they were baby authors with a small budget, and simply could not afford the outlandish costs of these services.
Because I am an author myself, I understood the struggle, so I offered my services at an affordable rate.
Over time, my clientele rapidly grew.
And that’s how The Crafty Quill was born!
My services include.
*Line Editing.
*Copy Editing.
*Proofreading.
*Beta Reading.
*Dialogue Formatting.
You may not need all of these services, but it’s best to decide which service you need, to make sure that your manuscript is the best that it can be before sending it to publishing.
What is a Line editor?
A line editor edits lines.
Word choice, sentence choice, paragraphs and words on the page.
The first step in editing, a line editor will make sure that the words in each sentence most clearly communicate your ideas.
The goal is to make your writing as smooth and polished as possible while maintaining your unique writing voice.
A line editor will polish your writing, while ensuring it is always your writing, through and through.
What is a Copy editor?
A Copy editor fine tunes your work.
Apart from recognizing mistakes in spelling, punctuation, and grammar, a copy editor will also correct any typographical errors they may find.
They may also fact check information like names, dates, and notable facts.
A copy editor will also make sure your writing is consistent.
What is a Proofreader?
Proofreading is the final stage of the writing process.
A proofreader offers an extra pair of eyes on your work to carefully check for any errors and inconsistencies that may have been missed in editing.
A crucial part of the publishing process, it is absolutely necessary before sending your work to a publisher.
What is a Beta Reader?
Beta readers will read your manuscript and give you feedback as to how your intended audience might respond to your work.
They will give you substantive feedback on whether they like the characters or whether the plot twists make sense.
Remember, though, beta readers are not a substitute for professional editing.
What is Dialogue Formatting?
Unlike line editing, dialogue formatting is the process of putting a manuscript together.
Readability. Story and dialogue flow. Line breaks. Chapter and sub chapter breaks.
Many authors will have difficulty with these issues.
Readability is key, and I can help to format your manuscript so that a reader will be able to easily follow the storyline at a smooth pace.
Why should you hire an experienced Copy editor, Line editor, Proofreader, and Beta Reader?
Sending your manuscript or short story to a publisher can be a very scary thing.
You want to be confident that your work is the very best that it can possibly be before you send it off.
Hiring a professional will save you valuable time, and give you that extra set of eyes that every author needs to ensure that everything looks good before you take that final step to publish.
